I am a feminist.
“A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men.”
– Gloria Steinmen
“We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you would threaten the man. Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Now marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors not for jobs or accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are.”
– Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
(Raise your hand if you’re guilty of recognizing it from Queen B’s Flawless. Both my hands are raised because
“All the women who are independent, throw your hands up at me” I’m also an independent woman , who apparently listens to too much Beyonce & Destiny’s Child.)
In all seriousness, it has never been as imperative as it is today to have a voice and join the movement for gender equality. It isn’t just a women’s issue but a human rights issue that I’m voicing my support for. It is sad to think that we live in a generation where this is still an issue, something that seems so simple but has yet to be addressed and dealt with in a proper manner (along with many other issues). Use your voice and join the movement today http://www.heforshe.org/
The shoes on my feet, I’ve bought it. The clothes I’m wearing, I’ve bought it. The rock I’m rockin’
‘Cause I depend on me
P.S: Sorry if you now have DC’s ‘Independent Women’ stuck in your head or if you have a strange urge to suddenly want to watch Charlie’s Angels, welcome to my life
